Sugar Hill Primary School

'Learning and Growing Together'

at Sugar Hill Primary School

“The scientist is not a person who gives the right answers, but the one who asks the right questions.”

Claude Levi-Strauss

Our Intent:

At Sugar Hill we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. The science curriculum fosters curiosity and enables them to ask open ended questions to guide their learning about our universe as well as promoting respect for the living and non-living.

The Science Curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

The knowledge and skills required to excel in this subject are set out in the progression documents below.

Cultural Capital

Children will learn about areas of significant scientific interest such asflora, forna, geology and geomorphology (landforms).  In addition, they will learn about famous scientists such as Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin.

  • They will also experience the following:
    • Meeting and talking to a scientist
    • Workshops with scientists
    • Experiences of industry through science
    • Possible visits to scientific industries

“Children must be taught how to think not what to think.”

Margaret Mead

Science Subject Champions

Our Science Champions visited Woodham School to learn from their Science Ambassadors.

Implementation:

Our Science lessons cover a broad range of topics from the National Curriculum as well as embedding the skills required to work scientifically alongside this.

Science topics at Sugar Hill always start with a Big Question approach where the children are given the opportunity to discuss their prior learning and what they would like to learn about the topic. These ideas allow the teacher to plan an engaging, practical and collaborative sequence of lessons which caters to both the students interests and the appropriate programme of study. From here the children are able to investigate their curiosities and work scientifically to solve problems and address misconceptions.

Impact

The successful approach at Sugar Hill results in a fun, engaging and high-quality science education that provides children with the foundations and knowledge for understanding the world. Our learners will not only acquire the appropriate age related knowledge but also skills which will equip them to progress into further education and their everyday lives with a rich scientific vocabulary.
