Personal, Social and Health Education
(PSHE Curriculum) and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education (SMSC) at Sugar Hill
At Sugar Hill we strongly promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith, through the curriculum and through our spiritual, moral, social and cultural provision along with Citizenship. At Sugar Hill we know that education is about helping children to understand how things work and to challenge and change them for the better. We recognise that values won’t be assumed by children if we demand they are, particularly if they’re very different from values held at home; they have to be arrived at through mutual exploration, critical analysis and understanding. We strongly advocate opportunities that allow children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence. Children are taught from Early Years to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of Britain. Children are taught to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely. Children at Sugar Hill are tolerant and respectful of others and taught to pay particular regard to the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010. Mrs Alderson leads weekly assemblies covering key news issues around living in Modern Britain and extending children’s knowledge of the wider world. The themes covered in these assemblies are then used as a springboard for children to develop their thoughts in class discussions and class debates linked to our key school driver in developing oracy.

Democracy At the start of each academic year the children decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of the charter. Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. Pupil groups meet regularly to discuss issues raised by their peers in class. The Rule of Law The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Children are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from services such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message. Individual Liberty Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for all children from Early Years to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. Mutual Respect Mutual respect is at the very heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have a direct effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community are supported to treat each other with respect. Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs Sugar Hill Primary is situated in an area which is not greatly culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE and PSHE teaching reinforce this. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths. At Sugar Hill Primary we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values. When reviewing the PSHE curriculum at Sugar Hill Primary School, we consider British Values, Character Education and Global Learning to be inextricably linked within the three PSHE strands: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Our School Motto ‘Learning and Growing Together’ is central to the work we do in the curriculum and hidden curriculum of our school.We are immensely proud of our school and our local community and strive to work with all stakeholders to prepare our children for their future in an ever changing world. We take our Safeguarding Responsibilities seriously to prepare our children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life and in doing so are addressing and actively promoting SMSC, British Values, The Equalities Act and our Statutory Duty with regards to the Prevent Strategy. |
